York is a city in and county seat of York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was approximately 6,985 at the 2000 census and up to 7,736 at the 2010 census. York is located approximately 27 miles (43 km) southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina and 13 miles (21 km) west of Rock Hill, South Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,985 people, 2,536 households, and 1,787 families residing in the city. The population density was 887.6 people per square mile (342.7/km²). There were 2,766 housing units at an average density of 351.5 per square mile (135.7/km²).
There were 2,536 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.9% were married couples living together, 25.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.13.
